Boot Camps

Learn what Boot Camps are and when to consider them.[ask a question] [printable format]

Started as an alternative to jail for juvenile adolescents, there are several types of teen boot camps from state run to privately run where the teen will be mentally and physically challenged. These facilities can be a starting place for getting help for a defiant teen. Parents often seek boot camps as a "wake up call" or "reality check" for their child who is out of control.

Boot camps are modeled after military basic training programs focusing on reality, respect and responsibility. They include uniforms, marching in formation, "yes sir" and "no sir" mentality, inspections, rigorous physical exercise, and exact obedience to rules in a very structured environment. Usually they do not permit any outside contact for a prescribed period of time.

Recidivism rates suggest that even though boot camps may help a struggling teen with respect, obedience, and appreciation, they are not a good long term solution.
