Military Schools
| Find out when military school is a good choice and when it's not. | [ask a question] [printable format] |
Military schools are educational institutions designed to train students in the Military Arts and Sciences. They are designed to bring discipline and structure and instill the value of hard work. They are designed as excellent academic boarding schools and can help students with mild problems who need more discipline.
Even though many parents think that a military school would "make a man" out of their son, military schools are most appropriate for children who do not struggle from any significant underlying emotional or behavioral problems. Military schools do not generally offer or make available, appropriate therapy or other types of psychological interventions for struggling teens. They are unable and unwilling to deal with students that are defiant, manipulative, unruly, and out of control. In a recent survey, 99% of all military schools contacted were not interested in accepting an unwilling teen.
The most difficult fact for most parents to deal with is the discharge policy: if a cadet is asked to leave, parents lose their tuition. (In most cases tuition is paid in advance for the whole semester).
