Teen problems often develop over years and won't be easily solved at home or on a weekend retreat or summer camp session. If your child's behavior had become out-of-hand and you feel he/she needs 24-hour supervision, you may want to consider placement in a Specialty Boarding School. Your teen needs a new approach and a new set of circumstances in order to turn his/her life around. Some specialty boarding schools involve a long-term stay (9 to 12 months), while there are a few with only 30 days' stay
These schools take children and adolescents who are struggling with defiance, school failure, motivation and self-esteem, ADD/ADHD, drug abuse and run away issues. Many of them use positive peer culture to teach and enforce good behaviors. The goal is to internalize new ways of acting and reacting.
There are several types of specialty boarding schools:
- Therapeutic
- Clinical
- Christian
- ADD & ADHD
- Substance abuse treatment
- Junior (ages 7 to 14)
- Weight loss
